SSR (Senior Secondary Recruit) is for technical roles — working on naval equipment, systems, and operations. MR (Matric Recruit) covers support roles like Chef and Steward aboard ships. Both are respectable, both have a path forward. Choose based on your qualification, not on what sounds better.

The Dates — And What You Should Be Doing on Each One

Don’t apply on the last day. Server traffic on 5–6 April will be heavy. Payment failures, upload errors, session timeouts — it all happens on the last day. Apply between 14–20 March and sleep easy.

₹550 for all categories — General, OBC, EWS, SC, ST. No concession this cycle.

Am I Eligible? — Read This Carefully

For Agniveer SSR

You must have passed Class 12 with Physics and Mathematics, along with at least one of the following: Chemistry, Biology, or Computer Science.

Your marks don’t have a minimum cutoff in the notification — but that doesn’t mean marks don’t matter. In practice, candidates with stronger academics tend to perform better in the written test since the paper tests the same subjects. If your 12th scores were low, you’ll need to work harder on the exam itself.

Important: Make sure all three subjects (Physics, Maths + one optional) appear on your marksheet. If you studied Commerce or Arts in 12th, SSR is not the path for you — look at MR instead.

For Agniveer MR (Chef / Steward)

You need a Class 10 pass from any recognised board in India. No specific subjects required.

This is a genuine opportunity if you didn’t pursue higher studies. The MR written exam tests basic aptitude, not advanced science — so the playing field is more level here. Don’t underestimate the physical and medical stages though.

Before anything else, check your birth certificate and confirm which batch you fall under. Some candidates are eligible for both — if that’s you, apply for both when the second batch opens. More attempts = better odds.

Age relaxation is given to SC/ST and OBC candidates as per government norms. Check the official notification PDF for exact relaxation figures. Don’t assume — read it.

The Selection Process — Stage by Stage, Honestly

Most guides list the stages. This one tells you where candidates actually get eliminated and what you can do about it.

Stage 1: INET Written Exam

This is the first and biggest filter. The paper for SSR covers English, Science (Physics, Chemistry, Maths), and General Knowledge. For MR, it covers English, Science & Maths (basic level), and GK.

What most candidates get wrong: They prepare only for Science and ignore English and GK. English carries real weightage and GK questions on current affairs, Indian Navy history, and geography come up regularly.

What to do right now:

• Get the previous years’ INET question papers — they’re available on the Navy’s official site and coaching platforms
• Spend at least 45 minutes daily on each section
• Solve full mock tests under timed conditions at least 3 weeks before the exam
• For GK, follow one national newspaper daily and specifically read anything related to Defence, India’s borders, and government schemes

Qualifying the written exam doesn’t mean you’re selected. It means you’ve earned the right to appear for the next stage. Keep that in mind.

Stage 2: Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

If you’ve never trained specifically for the Navy’s PFT, start today. The test typically includes:

• 1.6 km run — to be completed within a specified time
• 20 squat jumps
• 10 push-ups
• 20 sit-ups

These numbers sound easy on paper. In practice, many candidates fail the run because they’ve never trained consistently. Don’t wait until after the written result to start physical preparation. Train now, in parallel. If you clear the written exam, you’ll have only a few weeks to prepare for PFT — that’s not enough time to build stamina from zero.

Practical advice: Run 1.6 km every morning, track your timing, and cut it down week by week. Add push-ups and sit-ups to your evening routine. Consistency for 6 weeks beats two weeks of intense effort right before the test.

Stage 3: Medical Examination

This stage eliminates candidates who were otherwise performing well — and it’s the stage people prepare for the least.

Common disqualifying conditions include: poor eyesight (beyond acceptable limits), flat feet, low/high weight relative to height, hearing issues, and certain skin conditions.

What to do: Before you invest weeks of preparation, visit a government hospital or a doctor familiar with military medical standards and get a basic check done. Eyesight is the most common issue — if you wear glasses, check whether your corrected vision meets Navy standards. The notification PDF lists medical standards in detail. Read that section.

If something minor comes up during medical, having documented treatment history can sometimes help during the review process. Don’t hide anything — it always comes out and disqualifies you on integrity grounds.

Stage 4: Document Verification

By the time you reach this stage, the hard work is done. But candidates have been turned away here for avoidable reasons.

Documents you’ll need (keep originals + 3 sets of photocopies):

• 10th and 12th marksheets and certificates
• Date of birth certificate / Aadhaar
• Domicile certificate
• Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS) — must be issued by competent authority and within validity
• Character certificate from school or gazetted officer
• Passport-size photographs (same as uploaded in the form)

Get your category certificate renewed if it’s older than 1 year. Outdated certificates are a surprisingly common reason for rejection at document verification.

How to Apply — Do It Right the First Time

1. Go to joinindiannavy.gov.in — this is the only official portal. Don’t use any third-party site claiming to help you apply.
2. Register with a working mobile number and email ID you actually check. All communication will come here.
3. Fill in personal, educational, and contact details. Match every detail exactly as it appears on your documents — name, date of birth, category.
4. Upload photo and signature within the specified size and format. Rejections happen for blurry photos or wrong file sizes — read the instructions before uploading.
5. Pay ₹550 and screenshot the confirmation.
6. Submit and immediately download the confirmation page as a PDF. Store it safely.

After submitting, revisit your form during the correction window (10–11 April) to catch any errors. This is your only chance to fix mistakes before the exam.

If you’re on the fence, here’s an honest take: the Agniveer scheme is demanding and the 4-year nature means you need to be fully committed. But for a young person who wants discipline, a structured career, financial stability, and the respect that comes with serving in the Indian Navy — there are very few better options.

The written exam is clearable with focused preparation. The physical test is passable with consistent training. The medical is largely nature, but it helps to know in advance. Document verification is entirely in your control.
